What if you could turn your home into an ever-evolving playground?

Built by — Tin & Ed

Tin Nguyen and Edward Cutting are Australian artists and creative technologists based in New York.They create playful installations and experiences that illuminate the borderless dimension between art and science, the physical and the digital, the human and the non-human.

Kaleidoscopic Home is an augmented reality (AR) application that would enrich your life at home through playful spatial interventions to improve physical and mental wellbeing. The application explores how you can digitally augment your physical space to encourage a more active, creative and playful mode of living.

'Play is vital for children's mental, physical and social development, but we believe it's just as crucial for people of all ages.'

The application would turn your home into an extraordinary playground filled with an ever-changing array of surprising sculptural forms. Using AR and object recognition, exciting shapes and objects would emerge from the surface of your tables and chairs, floors, walls and ceilings. Through playful new configurations, the digital additions would continuously transform your space and create unexpected pathways through familiar surroundings.

A system of three-dimensional forms and simple colours means complex augmented reality scenes could be created by combining a number of basic elements. Because every home and every room is different, using 'Unity MARS' would allow the app to be context-aware and responsive to each unique space. Such an enriched environment would release the home's true potential as a space of stimulation and activity, challenging the notion that the home is just a space for rest and relaxation.

The creative interactions that the experiment encourages could have both positive physical as well as mental benefits. The increased activity as you navigate your shifting surroundings would increase heart rate and improve motor skills while decreasing blood pressure. Potentially, health data such as daily step count or sleep cycles could also be used to inform the creation of customised, personalised arrangements within your space that would benefit your specific health needs.
